Helping a Nervous Cat Enjoy Grooming

A cat that hides, hisses or swats at the brush is not being difficult. They are telling you that handling feels unsafe. The good news is that fear responses can be gently rewired with patience.

    Start smaller than you think

Begin with touch, not tools. Stroke your cat in their favourite spot for a few seconds, then stop before they object. Pair every touch with something they love, a treat or a chin scratch.

Introduce the brush as furniture first. Leave it near their bed so it smells like home. Then one slow stroke, treat, done. Build up over days, not minutes.

When to bring in a professional

If your cat is already matted or panics at handling, forcing the issue at home can set progress back. A groomer experienced with nervous cats, working in your home where your cat feels safest, can reset the experience.

For deeper fears, our 12-week behaviour programme addresses the root cause, so grooming stops being a battle altogether.
